Neatly tucked away in the vast aged forests of the northern coast, lies a past Estonia blended tastefully with a twist of the present. The enchanting haven of RAUDSILLA, is like nothing you have ever seen before.
Raudsilla is located about 50 km west of Tallinn, near the village of Kolga, on the bank of Pärlijõe River and within the boundary of Lahemaa, the largest National Park in Estonia.
The original cottage and surrounding area was once home to the lumberjack of the local Kolga manor. However, they have now been transformed by a master craftsman into a complex of flabbergasting structures in a blend of traditional Finno-Ugric craftsmanship and modern ingenuity.
Raudsilla is an altogether different experience and one that presents you with an opportunity to sample a different kind of Estonia. The entire complex consists of a 19th century traditional cottage, asauna in a ‘tepee’ by the bank of Pärlijõe river, a grill house and terrace further along the riverbank, a ‘tepee’ smoke house, several sleeping ‘tepees’, a stage and of course, the lavatory.
The surrounding slightly undulating landscape is also some of the most interesting and magnificent in Estonia. Pärlijõe River (Pearl River) is the only river in the Baltic States to contain freshwater pearly mussels, which the lord of the local Kolga manor was quite fond of collecting. Nearby, is a breathtaking example of a windfall as a result of an extremely destructive force of wind in 1986, which cut straight through the middle of the forest, leaving a bald path in its wake. There is also a Forest Brothers bunker in the vicinity, as well as a sudden 30m high cliff edge in the middle of the forest.
All of these, however, are just little appetisers of what awaits at Raudsilla.
